Snarfblatt strikes a nice balance between enjoying people and enjoying the world around him.

He genuinely likes interacting with his humans, but he doesn't depend on them for constant entertainment. He was just as happy exploring the room, investigating new objects, or working a toy as he was climbing into my lap for affection.

That confidence makes him an easy puppy to imagine living with. He's capable of entertaining himself appropriately while still enjoying being part of whatever his family is doing.

I also appreciated how thoughtful he was. When something new appeared, he didn't panic or react impulsively. He paused, gathered information, and then decided what to do next.

Working & Performance Potential

One of the things I found most interesting about Snarfblatt was how he likes to work.

He doesn't simply chase a toy and bring it back. He hunts for it, studies it, carries it, and genuinely enjoys figuring it out. Throughout the evaluation, it became clear that using his brain is rewarding all by itself.

That's a quality I really appreciate.

I don't think Snarfblatt is the kind of dog that wants to spend every day lying on the couch waiting for something to happen. I think he'll be happiest in a home that gives him opportunities to think, learn, and participate.

That doesn't mean he needs to become a competition dog.

It simply means he'll probably enjoy having a job.

Whether that's scent work, retriever games, Rally, trick training, hiking, advanced obedience, or learning new skills around the house, I think he'll thrive when he's working alongside his family.

One thing I always evaluate is where a puppy naturally finds reinforcement. For Snarfblatt, interesting objects and the environment compete with his attention to people. That's an incredible asset for many sports and working roles, but service work asks for something slightly different. A service dog needs to make its handler the highest priority, even when the environment is full of distractions.

Based on this evaluation alone, I wouldn't place Snarfblatt among my strongest service prospects.

I would place him among the puppies I'd be most excited to watch in scent work, retriever games, and other activities that let him use both his nose and his brain.

I think that's where you'll see him shine.

Living With Snarfblatt

Life with Snarfblatt is likely to be active, engaging, and fun.

He's the kind of dog that enjoys carrying toys, exploring new places, and discovering what's around the next corner. At the same time, he showed a wonderful off switch during his evaluation. Once the toys disappeared, he settled comfortably for handling and accepted restraint without concern. His response wasn't stress—it was simply, "I'd rather get back to what I was doing."

That balance between activity and relaxation is something many families appreciate.

What I Loved

One of my favorite things about Snarfblatt was watching how he worked.

He didn't simply chase a toy. He hunted it. Once he found it, he wanted to possess it, investigate it, and understand it. Even the way he played suggested he was thinking through the experience rather than simply reacting.

He's also a naturally nose-oriented puppy. Throughout the evaluation, he frequently relied on scent and genuinely enjoyed searching for objects that had disappeared. Watching him work, I got the impression that the process itself was rewarding—not just finding the toy.

Those are qualities I love to see in a puppy.

Whether he eventually enjoys scent work, retriever games, advanced trick training, or simply interactive games at home, I think he's the kind of dog that will thrive when he has an opportunity to use both his nose and his brain.

More than anything, Snarfblatt struck me as a puppy who enjoys solving little puzzles. He doesn't just want to experience the world—he wants to figure it out.

One Thing I'd Continue Watching

One of the questions I always ask during a temperament evaluation is, "What naturally reinforces this puppy?"

For Snarfblatt, that answer isn't entirely clear yet.

He genuinely enjoys people, but when something interesting appeared in his environment, it often became his primary focus. That's an incredible strength for many working roles. Dogs that love to hunt, search, and solve problems often excel in scent work, retrieving games, and other performance sports.

Service work, however, asks for something a little different.

A service dog spends much of its life paying attention to one person, even when the environment is full of interesting distractions.

Based on this evaluation alone, I'm not yet convinced where Snarfblatt naturally falls on that spectrum.

That isn't a criticism.

It's simply something I'd continue watching as he matures.

Snarfblatt is an AKC Golden Retriever from our Velma & Ransom "Whatchamacallit" litter.
