Debunking the Myths around the Goldendoodle

Anything your dog can do, my dog can do better

There are so many Myths and Misinformation surrounding Goldendoodles, let me share the facts.

Myth - “Just Get A Poodle”

Don’t get us wrong—we love our Poodles! They are intelligent, elegant, and truly remarkable dogs. But Poodles simply aren’t the perfect fit for everyone. That’s where the Goldendoodle shines: by combining the friendly, goofy, loving, and forgiving nature of a Golden Retriever with the intelligence and low-shedding qualities of a Poodle, you get a companion that is truly well-rounded, joyful, and adaptable. That priceless blend is what makes Goldendoodles such cherished family pets.

Myth - "Coats are Harder to Maintain"

When it comes to Goldendoodles, coat texture and curl are key variables, and they come directly from their Poodle lineage. Poodles give us the ability to control curl and coat type, while Golden Retrievers contribute a soft, silky texture. The result? Beautiful straight or wavy coats that are highly sought after by breeders and families alike.

We focus on these coat types because they are easier to care for—requiring less frequent brushing, minimizing matting, and keeping your Goldendoodle looking luxurious with less effort. It’s all part of our commitment to breeding dogs that are not only gorgeous but practical for everyday family life.

Myth - “Unpredicatable Temperaments”

The truth is—you get what you breed. By carefully selecting the temperament and lineage of the parents, we can predict the qualities and personality traits of the puppies. Repeat breedings give us a clear history of what to expect, and the lines of the parents provide valuable insight into the potential of each litter.

Of course, every litter will still have individual personalities—from the playful and energetic puppy to the calm, snuggly companion. This is true for both purebred and purpose-bred dogs. That’s why temperament testing is so important: it allows us to understand each puppy’s unique character and match them to the families and environments where they will thrive.

By prioritizing temperament and careful breeding, we ensure that every Goldendoodle puppy has the best chance to grow into a confident, happy, and well-adjusted family companion.

Myth - “Doodles are Hyper”

A Goldendoodle is a sporting dog at heart, inheriting the best traits of both the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodle. Unlike a Golden Retriever, Goldendoodles tend to be less rambunctious, and unlike some Poodles, they are not overly driven or high-strung. The result is a dog that is energetic, playful, and intelligent, yet balanced and well-suited for family life.

When choosing a Goldendoodle, it’s important to consider exercise needs and lifestyle compatibility. Like all sporting breeds, Goldendoodles thrive with regular physical activity and mental stimulation. They are not hyperactive or neurotic—they are simply active, curious, and eager to engage with their families in meaningful ways.

Goldendoodles make excellent companions for active households, offering the perfect combination of energy, focus, and affection while maintaining a temperament that is forgiving, loving, and adaptable.

Myth - “Doodle Breeders are BYB”

Ethical breeding focuses on healthy dogs with sound structure and temperament, carefully selected for purposeful breeding. Responsible breeders health test, evaluate temperament, and breed to improve the breed, producing well-rounded, family-ready puppies.

Backyard breeding (BYB) occurs when animals are bred in inadequate conditions with minimal care, often by those lacking experience. Large-scale irresponsible breeding is sometimes called puppy farming.

Every breed has both ethical and unethical breeders. It’s up to buyers to vet breeders carefully to ensure they choose a program that prioritizes health, temperament, and responsible practices.

Myth - “No Quality Dogs are Available to Doodlers”

Despite what purists or critics might suggest, the idea that responsible Goldendoodle breeding harms purebred lines is simply not true. Poodle and Golden Retriever breeders alike make their lines available to ethical, knowledgeable breeders, and our program is a clear example of this collaboration.

Our breeding stock excels both in the conformation ring and in performance and temperament testing, demonstrating that responsible, purposeful breeding produces dogs that are healthy, well-rounded, and capable in every aspect of life.
