Not every confident puppy is the first one through the door.
Some puppies take a moment to understand what's happening before deciding how they'd like to participate.
That's Gubbins.
From the beginning of his evaluation, he approached the world thoughtfully. He explored his surroundings, carried toys from place to place, and quietly observed what was happening around him before making decisions.
One of the things I appreciated most was that he never stopped trying to engage. Even when something made him uncertain, his instinct wasn't to give up—it was to slow down, gather information, and keep moving forward once he understood he was safe.
To me, that's an incredibly honest puppy.

Personality & Temperament
Gubbins is a calm, observant puppy who enjoys taking life in before fully jumping in.
He isn't driven by impulse. He likes to understand what's happening first, then participate with confidence once he feels comfortable. That thoughtful nature makes him easy to live with and rewarding to train because he genuinely thinks about what he's experiencing.
He also has a wonderfully independent side.
He enjoys people, but he doesn't need to be the center of attention every minute of the day. He's perfectly content carrying a toy, exploring his environment, or quietly entertaining himself before checking back in with his family.
That balance often creates an adult dog that's affectionate without becoming overly dependent.
Much of that confidence begins long before families take their puppies home. What I Loved
One of my favorite moments happened after the evaluation had already gone off script.
An unfamiliar dog caused Gubbins enough concern that I intentionally paused the evaluation.
There was no pressure. No forcing him through it. No expectation that he simply "get over it."
Instead, he was given reassurance, a toy, and the opportunity to discover for himself that everything was okay. And he did. He recovered. He went back to work. He played. He explored.
That willingness to keep trying tells me far more about his character than if nothing had ever happened in the first place.
I also loved watching him carry toys throughout the evaluation. Like so many Golden Retrievers, he simply seemed happiest when he had something in his mouth.

One Thing I'd Continue Building
If Gubbins were staying here, I'd spend my early training helping him build confidence around unfamiliar dogs.
Not through dog parks. Not through chaotic puppy playgroups.
Instead, I'd focus on calm, controlled experiences with emotionally stable adult dogs and structured puppy classes where learning—not socializing—is the priority.
The goal isn't to teach him to love every dog he meets. The goal is simply to teach him that other dogs don't need to concern him. That's a very achievable goal, and I think he'll continue growing with thoughtful guidance.
Living With Gubbins
Life with Gubbins is going to feel calm and rewarding.
He enjoys playing, carrying toys, and spending time with his people, but he also has the ability to settle into his own routine. He's not constantly asking for attention, nor does he need someone entertaining him every moment of the day.
His prey drive gives him a fun, playful side without becoming overwhelming, and his moderate energy level makes him an easy companion for families who enjoy daily walks, training, and adventures without needing a dog that's constantly on the go.
